Heather Robinson: Abstract Artist
Today’s featured portfolio is Heather Robinson. She’s an abstract artist that I follow on Instagram, and I’m totally captivated by her paintings. I also really love the way she talks about her work in her artist statement.
A lot of artists struggle to write their artist statement and aren’t sure how it should be different from what’s in their bio. Heather’s site gives us a great example of how to make this distinction. She also provides a nice structure that you can follow if you’re not sure what to write about in your own statement.
In the first paragraph, she talks about what her work is about and what interests her as an artist, such as pattern, color, and texture. Next, she describes her process in a way that is interesting for the reader, but not too technical for a general audience. Finally, she explains the meaning behind her work and why she feels compelled to make it. The overall result is that we feel more able to connect with her and her work because we understand how it’s made, what it means, and why she creates these paintings.
The purpose of a good artist statement is to help your audience understand and relate to your work. If writing for your specific audience is a struggle, my Portfolio Writing Workbook can help. There are many tips and writing exercises to help you self-reflect and write about your work in a way that will appeal to your audience.
