On Mondays, we practice critique skills with new artworks in different mediums. Today we’ll look at the film Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Don’t read this unless you have seen the movie. There will be spoilers!
When giving a critique, it’s polite to give both positive and negative feedback. I’ll start and end with positive comments, and give any suggestions for improvement in the middle.
What I liked most about this film was the plot. Although I loved the previous Star Wars movie, The Force Awakens, I felt that the plot of that movie was too similar to the original trilogy. In The Last Jedi, the story is completely new and surprising. There were many twists and turns that I didn’t expect. It was totally unpredictable, yet it clearly followed the previous films.
Another thing I really liked about this film was the focus on powerful female characters. In the original trilogy, Princess Leia was the only main female character, and although I love her, she was kind of one-dimensional. In The Last Jedi, there are many important female characters, and they are much more complex.
The only thing I didn’t like about The Last Jedi, was the portrayal of Yoda. I thought he looked too computer-generated. Although I liked his part in the film, I prefer the look of the old Yoda puppet. The computer version just doesn’t look quite right to me.
Finally, I thought the music of this film was wonderful. John Williams has written the music for all the Star Wars films, and he is an amazingly talented composer. I think it’s especially creative that he wrote special theme music for each major character. It adds an extra dimension to the film that I really appreciate.
